Public Statement for GreenFaith Certification

Public Statement for GreenFaith Certification
Congregational Church in Cumberland United Church of Christ
by the Rev. Diane Bennekamper, Senior Minister

Advent 2010

Advent represents the beginning of the church year. It is appropriate, as we begin a new year, for the Congregational Church in Cumberland UCC to assume a new goal in our ongoing efforts to properly care for God’s creation.  By affirmation of the Church Council, we will embark on a two year certification program to become a GreenFaith Sanctuary. This is a program of the organization GreenFaith – Interfaith Partners for the Environment.

Through the efforts of many people, we have already accomplished quite a bit of environmentally conscientious “housekeeping” by increasing our recycling, installing more efficient lighting and solar hot water, as well as offering educational opportunities for the community. Participation in the certification program will provide our Green Team with a focus for new activities that will involve all aspects of our church life. I look forward to the learning that will come through this program. In this way we hope to model to the community how to be responsible environmental citizens, recognizing the sacredness of the gift of earth, and our common responsibility for its well-being.
