Meet Your Farmer Film Update – May Newsletter 2012

50 people attended the film screening and potluck on March 24th.  Attendees mingled with local farmers and fishermen from Cumberland Farmers Market, who stayed after the film for a lively discussion.  Jim Gerritson, an organic farmer from Aroostook County and Dave Swan’s cousin, shared some of his experiences as the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against Monsanto over genetically modified seeds.  We also explored how to make local food more accessible to people.  One idea is for the Cumberland Farmer’s Market to set up in the church parking lot one afternoon a week when parents are picking up their kids at school.  Stay tuned for more about this in the fall.  The film inspired the formation of “food boosters” to work for healthier food options in the schools.
